Getting the best graduates to consider a career with the police will be easier now.

Audience.

Everyone thinks they know what the police do but who are they? What role do graduates have in the police? And how can the best graduates be recruited and their skills utilised effectively to serve the police and the public?

Challenge.

The recruitment and promotion of graduates in the police is a contentious and debated issue. The NPIA wanted to get insight into how graduates could be attracted, retained and motivated.

Insight.

To research opinions and practices we spoke to stakeholders across the police, held focus groups with graduate officers and students as well as an online survey with non-graduate officers. We also audited campus marketing materials and analysed market statistics.

Result.

Our research highlighted a range of perceptions and perspectives which directed our recommendations for effective graduate marketing, recruitment, motivation and retention. Our proposals and insight informed strategic recommendations put to the Home Office to influence the future of police recruiting.
