An entrepreneurial voice
We’re excited to announce that December’s With The Team talk will be delivered by entrepreneur Harriot Pleydell-Bouverie, someone who famously turned down the BBC Dragons.
For those who are unaware, the Dragonās are a group of successful entrepreneurs who assess a business case āliveā on TV. Depending on the pitch they’ll agree to put up investment in exchange for a chunk of the business. This usually involvesĀ DragonāsĀ seeking to grab as much equity as they can in an idea in exchange for what can appear to be a large sum of cash.
It takes courage to turn them down ā and especially if you’re the one asking for the cash.
But that’s what Harriot did, showing total belief in her idea; having a clear sense of its value; and not budging on what it was worth.
Harriotās business – Mallow and Marsh – went on to be hugely successful and was eventually purchased by the Serious Sweets Company. Today youāll find the brand on sale via Sainsburys, Boots, Ocado and many other high street brands.
What will be covered in this talk?
During her 40-minute talk, Harriot will discuss 3 major topics:
- The entrepreneurial mindset: how you train yourself to live the attitudeĀ and behaviours required for commercial success.
- The importance of a clear vision for your business: identifying what you stand for and against; where you are headed; and what you want to become. She’ll share why brands must set out the difference that they truly think they can deliver to a set of customers.
- Clear thinking around the valueĀ of that idea to customers, to shareholders, to others in the supply chain.
As the late, great Anita Roddick once said,
āBusinessĀ is more powerful than politics, and itās more powerful than religion. So itās going to have to be the vigilante consumer.ā
This will be a fascinating, insightful, and inspirational talk from a leading entrepreneur who knows what it takes to create cut-through propositions and carry them through.
There will be time for questions at the end.
Harriot Pleydell-BouverieNo one starts out with the perfect product or business, it develops over time through the way you react to the learnings at the start and so seeing that, and being able to develop and improve as you go is vital.
