The National Centre for Domestic Violence (NCDV)

Turning corporate responsibility into life-saving impact

Context

Established in 2002, The National Centre for Domestic Violence (NCDV) provides a service that helps victims obtain protection through the courts. They offer a free, fast emergency injunction service for survivors of domestic abuse and violence, regardless of their financial circumstances, race, gender, or sexual orientation. And NCDV are one of the few organisations that support both women and men.

But before 2002, this wasn’t always the case. Police and victims would use local firms of solicitors to obtain non-molestation orders. However, most solicitors were only willing to accept clients that were either eligible for public funding or clients who could afford to pay privately. And solicitors were taking up to two weeks to get the client into court to obtain the order. Leaving victims, and those ‘not eligible’, unprotected.

The NCDV pro-bono team help survivors with the relevant Court paperwork, including a witness statement drafting service, and booking into Court process. And they will also find Court Supporters to accompany them at Court, if required.

The Opportunity

Around 1 in 5 people experience domestic abuse in their lifetime (1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men), and the NCDV receive around 8,500 referrals a month from individuals looking for help and support.

But as a community interest company, any small profit they make is re-invested to improve the services they offer. So, funding from corporate partnerships and donations is an essential lifeline to keep their service going.

Once we became aware of the funding challenge NCDV were facing, we made the decision to offer our help pro bono, to create awareness and hopefully secure funding from businesses.

Our Work

The impact of domestic abuse extends beyond the home into all facets of life, including the workplace. This is a fact. Nearly 9 out of 10 workers experiencing domestic abuse report a negative effect on their job performance. Over half of these individuals may need to take time off work due to the abuse, and many report being late or having difficulty getting to work.

Using familiar workplace imagery and symbolism, we bought the statistics to life in a way that emphasised the fact that domestic abuse could be in your workplace right now. Employers have a duty of care to ensure a safe working environment for all employees. It’s essential that they recognise domestic abuse as a workplace issue and implement policies to support affected employees.

Our ask of businesses is to consider supporting NCDV as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, meaning they are impacting society and genuinely transforming lives.

The team has been outstanding in helping us bring our vision for a partnership program to life. We wanted to create an initiative that targets businesses with a strong social conscience, encouraging them to support our work in transforming lives. Through a series of workshops and follow-up meetings, both in person and virtually, we collaboratively developed the 'Domestic Abuse is at Work Too' campaign. Thanks to their expertise and support, we are now successfully rolling out this campaign via social media and by arranging face-to-face meetings with key businesses and organisations, thank you to everyone at the Team.

Results

The campaign went live on social media in October 2025 to coincide with Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, so we have everything crossed for some positive results.
